The Iman Foundation and renowned think thank ResPublica got together to hold a breakfast briefing on the topic of 'Mediating Values, Tackling Extremism: Civic approaches for a more cohesive society' with Lord Carlile of Berriew, Independent Reviewer on Counter-Terrorism Laws and Professor Eric Kaufmann, Professor of Politics at Birckbeck University.

The topic for discussion involved exploring the role of institutions and small groups in promoting common ‘civic values’, and outlining how the Government can promote this role on a national scale for both integration within communities and in tackling extremist views.

Attendees considered the effectiveness of the Government’s Prevent agenda in tackling extremism, examined the potentially cohesive influence of shared national discussion of British values, and reflected on how organisations and institutions might be best placed to tackle radicalisation at a local level. This discussion provided an important contribution to future work from ResPublica’s British Civic Life workstream. Guests included a number of senior policy experts from businesses and voluntary organisations.

ResPublica is a British independent public policy think tank, founded in 2009 by Phillip Blond. It is a multi-disciplinary, non party-political research organisation, whose aim is to create bold solutions to enduring social and economic problems.
