It is with a deep sense of sadness that everyone at IMAN today learned of the tragic death of Ahmedou Ould Abdel Aziz.‬

‪Ahmedou was a personal friend, but he was also a soul mate.‬

‪He was not just on the Executive Committee of The Iman Foundation and IMAN President for Africa, but was also the founder of his own Errahma Foundation in Mauritiana.‬

Ahmedou was a deeply committed patriot who worked tirelessly, and without any desire for public recognition, on behalf of his country and its citizens. He died while on a humanitarian mission for the Nouakchott foundation launched by him, Errahma, which assists some of the poorest and most marginalised communities in Mauritania.

While his death is a severe blow to us all, we are comforted that he died as he lived - putting others before himself, and working to uphold the dignity of all.

‪Ahmedou understood that wherever we live, and whatever our beliefs, we are all bonded by a set of values common to every human being. He was touched by a very special sense of decency, and had deep affection for others, however well he knew them.‬

‪He will be sorely missed by everyone who was lucky enough to know him, and his loss will be felt by all those who value democracy, freedom and human rights.‬

‪Our deepest condolences go out to his family, whom he loved with all his heart. He is survived by his wife and young son. They should know that Ahmedou's spirit will live on within IMAN, and we will do everything in our power to remember him and promote the values by which he lived.
