Cairo: British MPs deliver seminar on freedom and democracy

Syed Kamall, British Member of the European Parliament and Steve Baker, Member of the British Parliament delivered a seminar on the 'Principles of a Free Society' to leading Egyptian political and civil society figures at a hotel in Cairo this week.

The seminar was organised and hosted by the Iman Foundation as part of its programme to promote liberty and pluralism in the Middle East and North Africa.

Syed and Steve's presentation focused on the concepts of Freedom, Democracy and Tolerance and ended with a robust discussion about Egypt's transition to democracy.

Delegates included presidential hopeful Professor Ambassador Abdallah Al Ashaal, lawyer, professor of law and politics, former ambassador and deputy foreign minister; Dr Mona Makram-Ebeid, former MP and professor of political science at the American University, Cairo; Ambassador Gamal Bayoumi, former ambassador, former general secretary of the united arab investors and head of the Egypt-EU partnership unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Dr Mohamad Al Khasham specialist in international law and lecturer at the Cairo University; Mr Ali Salem, leading Egyptian author and playwright and a delegation from the 'El-Ghad' (Tomorrow) Party led by its Chairman Moussa Moustafa Moussa.
